Do you think this is a sign of guilt?

I lost my job of two years a couple of months ago. I was let go abruptly and my boss, who I thought I had a good relationship with, never let me know this would happen. Since then, he has given me a nice letter of recommendation; but only because I called and asked him for it. I remembered his birthday which was two weeks ago and sent him a very nice card. He never thanked me. When I called to ask him if he received it, he told me he had been out of the office for ten days. He did admit it was in his mail, but he never thanked me. He was always so courteous when I worked there. If he did not want to call, he could have emailed me. He just does not want to initiate any communication with me. It's like he is determined that this is the way it will be. I did a great job when I was there, and I am very hurt by his coolness that I feel like crying. It is so hard when someone you thought liked you as a person wants nothing to do with you. Do you think he might have wanted me out of there? I feel very hurt and angry. I wish that someday I could hurt his feelings. Please give me your feedback. Please don't say anything hurtful; I feel bad enough now. Thank you.
